On My Radar: Wardrobe Essentials

Wardrobe EssentialsEvery season I start to feel that familiar pull that makes me think about downsizing my closet. I’ve thought about building a capsule more times than I can count but I’ve never actually gotten around to creating one. The last time I attempted, I think my idea of how my capsule would look was super dreamy, but it wasn’t really practical for my life. Truth is, I’m a busy working mama who works from home 95% of the time and is chasing boys around for pretty much the same ratio in my off hours. I had these ideas of these super cute capsules but…I’d start building them only to realize they weren’t the right fit and I’d abandon them. But that’s not the only reason things weren’t working out.

When it comes to being more intentional in my life, it makes sense to include things down to the smallest detail like, my wardrobe. When I would start to think about building these capsules, I would find myself drifting towards the same old stores I’ve always shopped, which didn’t feel real intentional at all. I’ve always wanted to support indie brands, companies owned by black women, and other consciousness businesses and for some reason, I’ve never tied that desire to something so simple and tangible like my wardrobe.

I want to say that, I’m going to build a capsule wardrobe for summer but the reality is, I probably won’t get all the way through it. Coins, bills, and other things. But, I would like to start thinking about making more intentional purchases towards my wardrobe. And phasing things out slowly as I go. Sharing a few things that have caught my interest that I’m hoping to add soon.

LUNYA SLEEPWEAR

Let me be the first to say that dropping coins like this on things you wear to bed sounds insane but, I’m actually here for it. For one, I love the vision of the founder as a founder myself, I can’t help but appreciate a good story. And then, the reality and functionality of these pieces make so much sense for my life. Truth moment: there are some days between writing deadlines, elementary school drop offs, home chores, and chasing a four year old that what I roll out of bed in–typically a basketball shirt and leggings–is what I spend my day in. And there really is something to be said about looking good and feeling good. This sleep dress has my name all over it along with these pants for when the weather cools down.

SOUK BOHEMIAN

You know those Instagram accounts that just speak to your life? The Bazaar Bohemian is one of those. I’m obsessed with the visuals, the earthy colors, the abundance of green plants, and the overflow of melanin. When I learned that she had launched a shop, Souk Bohemian, I knew that I would love it just the same. I’ll always love a good graphic tee or sweatshirt when it’s cold and the Boh Collection has exactly what I’m looking for. And even though, we’re talking about wardrobe essentials, their travel bags are definitely swoon worthy.

BROTHER VERSAILLES

Remember earlier when I was talking about functionality and practical items? Even though at first glance this brand would seem to be the exact opposite of that, it’s not. I’ve followed Aurora on Instagram since forever but it was only recently when I saw she took a trip to Haiti that I got more interested in her brand and the products. I love, no seriously, truly love the mission behind her company, the workers she helps employ around the world, and the stories behind Brother Versailles shoes and bags. In particular, I’ve got my eye on these sandals.

What do you think about capsules? Into them or nah? Or are you on board with me, just making more intentional purchases and getting rid of the things that are just taking up space? ~xoxo

Once a month I share a letter from my journey with those on my email list. Mostly stuff that didn’t make it here or I’m too nervous to share on the blog–I’m working on the transparency thing but some things I keep for the people who are in this thing with me ya know? And a few extra tidbits along the way.

Odunde

One of those better late than never posts. You know how that goes. Summer in Philly is here in full effect and as usual, I’m never prepared. But, learning how to go with the flow a lot more these days and thankful that it seems to be working. A couple weekends back we made a super last minute and super brief stop at the Odunde festival in South Philly. If there is one festival I make sure to get to it’s Odunde. I decided to wear the dashiki I bought the year before at one of the vendors. Pink, of course. And like any festival, the hubs stopped to do a street performance. He was dope, as always. Ended the day with a couple pics taking advantage of this super cute Visit Philly sign. Gotta love the city of brotherly love. ~xoxo

Memorial Day Style: A Striped Maxi Dress

Memorial Day Style

Memorial Day is here. A chance to remember fallen soldiers, a day off from work–insert side eye as I reminisce on the days of paid holidays, no complaints though, just saying ;)–bbq’s, family time, and the unofficial start to summer. I’m not sure what it’s feeling like in your city but for Philly, we kicked off Memorial Day Weekend with temps in the 90’s. So much for that spring capsule huh? I had just added a few more pieces too and then bam! Summer is here. I can’t say I’m upset though as the weather allowed me to pull out one of my favorite summer dresses. This blue and grey striped maxi. Continue Reading

Mom Styling + Capsule Pieces

Mom style | styled her lifeTook advantage of the fact that it actually felt like Spring in Philly on Mother’s Day and snapped a few quick flicks in the most casual outfits in my closet. I was torn between getting all dolled up or staying in my PJ’s but a trip to visit my Mom called for me putting on real clothing. I’ve been slowly, and when I say slowly I mean it, adding to my capsule wardrobe so lucky for me, I actually had something quick to pull together without me even thinking about it. Now THAT is what a capsule wardrobe is supposed to do for you! Continue Reading

Discovering a Spring Scent

Pinrose Gilded Fox | styled her life

I’ve always been–and if we’re being honest will always be–a shea butter, coconut oil kinda girl. There are few things that are as versatile and get the job done, whatever the job is, like these two beauty staples. On any given day, you would most likely find me sans body spray, perfume, or fragrance mist, instead opting to use only my faithful butters and go. But as of late, I’ve been finding myself noticing fragrances and scents more often and decided it was time I added a few to my beauty collection.

As a recovering product junkie (on a good day), I wanted to make sure I approached my new search for the perfect spring scents with intention. So I spent a ridiculous amount of time sampling, sniffing, and figuring out which notes and fragrances I was naturally drawn to. For spring, I found myself gravitating towards those scents that were floral and fruity which made it super easy to find my every day fragrance. Not to mention I already had something in mind. But for my night scent, I wanted something a little sexier. Something with a little spice.

Spring Capsule Wardrobe

Spring Capsule Wardrobe

Capsule wardrobes have been all over the blogs for…ever and a day but ya know, better late than never right? When we moved into our house this past summer, I wound up getting rid of a lot of stuff. There’s nothing worse than moving somewhere new and taking along things that literally need to be left where they are. Needless to say, that left my closet looking a bit empty. The past few months, I’ve been making do with what I have, it’s easy to get through the winter season when you’re all bundled up and indoors anyway. Now that’s it Spring though, I’ve been looking towards my sad closet and referencing my own blog posts (like this one on mom style and this cute outfit I love) and am really ready to get my wardrobe together. So where does one start when they need inspo on anything? The blogs! I decided that a capsule wardrobe was how I wanted to approach my closet. It makes sense for who I am, what I do, and the intentional practices I’m working on implementing in my life. I played around on Polyvore for awhile and came up with what a Spring capsule wardrobe would look like for me. Some things I already have, other things I have but want to replace with more quality items, and some things I won’t make it around to getting this season, but I like what I’ve come with. I also like having a sort of guide to help me with shopping and resisting impulse buys that end up in the back of my closet, never to be seen again.  Continue Reading

How to Slay Mom Style (Like Tia Mowry)

mom style

You know one of my favorite hashtags to scroll on the ‘gram? #momstyle. Judge me. But honestly, as a beauty and fashion loving mama who’s tries to keep it cute with three boys in tow, can you blame me? And yes, for me “Mom Style” in particular is my thing, because when you’re chasing dreams and kids, comfortability is right up there with chic-ablity…yep made that up. Anyway, there are ton a fashionable mama’s killing it on Instagram (check that hashtag and thank me later) but if there is one celebrity that does mom style the best, to me, it’s Tia Mowry. Maybe it’s the fact that I just love her (I mean she has a cooking show!) or possibly it’s because she can rock a straight look AND a natural curly fro…either way. She kills it. With the arrival of Spring and wardrobe revamps under way, it’s time to take notes ladies! Continue Reading

Denim on Denim + Instagram Husbands

Denim on Denim

Some days, no matter how hard I try to get a hold of my schedule…it gets away from me. This past weekend was one of those days. I previously made plans to go a beauty expo with my business partner, totally missing the fact that the Mr. had a game the same day. The day of the event shows up when my trusty Google reminder let me know that right in the middle of the expo…hubs has to leave for work. Gahhh. Of course, undermining my own good judgement I decided I could leave early, hit the expo for a few hours, and be back home in plenty of time. I’ll just let you guys figure out how that went. But not all was lost. I took advantage of a cute outfit and natural daylight to catch some cute outfit pics. Denim on Denim for the win and shoutout to Instagram husband for the photo cred ;).

Style Wish List: Leopard Clutch x Love Cortnie

LoveCortnie_Ashleigh Clutch Styled

Is it me or has walking out the door for work these past few days been feeling a bit more brisk than usual? Fall is that you boo? Summer flew by. I blinked and here it is September. I was JUST celebrating my sons last day of Kindergarten in June. TIME slow down pleaseee. I barely had a chance to break in any summer style and I am already getting my fall wardrobe together. Over the past couple of years my style has really “grown up” and I find myself less concerned with trends and more focused on creating a solid wardrobe and curating pieces from indie, conscious, and–my passion–brown girl owned brands. Supporting my brown girls is what. I. do. and I want to translate that in every area of my life. Including my closet girl.

LoveCortnie_Ashleigh Clutch

I believe I was surfing the gram when I came across style blogger Cortnie and learned that aside from her dope blog she creates her own line of bags: Love Cortnie. Forever a clutch enthusiast I was excited when I came across this large leopard clutch on her site. LOVEEEE.

LoveCortnie_Ashleigh Clutch Styled

For me, an oversized printed clutch is a staple in my minimalist-afro-chic wardrobe (yes that’s a thing don’t debate me on this). Since most of my outfits are pretty simple, accessorizing is key. Skinnies, tee, and blazer = simple. WITH an large leopard clutch = girl you better werk.

Check out Love Cortnie for a pretty irresistible collection of printed clutches including the one on my wish list which is the Ashleigh. Handmade fashion by a brown girl. Get into it. As for me, I’m off to selectively place the link to this post in the hubs mentions ;).

What’s on your current style wish list? Any brands I should be checking out?

Is anywhere else as hot as it’s been in Philly this past few weeks? My snapchat temperature has been at 85+ for weeks–thisbrownqueen if you want to add me!

On the days I’m not wearing a maxi dress, I’m super casual in shorts and a tank. And a pair of chucks of course. Classic man. I bought this super cute bag at Odunde (an African festival in Philly) last month. I love it as a clutch or with the strap and I dress it up or down, whatever I feels.

Summer Style: Maxi Dresses

Everybody has that one thing that is their signature seasonal item to wear. For me, it’s boots in the fall, long cardigans in the spring, and maxi dresses in the summer. I love maxi dresses so much that if it was up to me I’d just buy a whole bunch and wear them everyday. But the way my life is set up (currently) I can’t. But a girl can dream. Goals.

Maxi dresses are just the ultimate summer must have. They’re cute, easy, super versatile and the list goes on. Here are a just a few I’m crushing on…my birthday is later this month…maybe the Mr. will come read the blog and take a hint ;).

Summer Style: Chic Bathing Suits by Brown Girl Designers

Chic Bathing Suits

Because ya girl doesn’t really do the bikini thing, I’m forever on the look out for bathing suits that not only give a little coverage but actually look cute as well. Last summer finding high waisted bikini and chic one pieces was a challenge but I found a few cute ones so I was a happy mama. This year, the search was on again but I just knew there had to be some brown girl designers that had exactly what I was looking for so I hit the gram and twitter and found a couple superrrr dope bathing suits that will be taking all my coins this summer. All of em.

ANDREA IYAMAH

Andrea Iyamah_Tapiwa

How freaking cute is this high waist two piece by Andrea Iyamah. Besides the pattern just being just my style, the design provides a nice amount of coverage for someone like me. I don’t know too much about the brand but what I gather from the website it’s “ethnic with a modern twist”. Their Instagram is full of brown beach girl visual inspiration. It’s love!

ZUBAIDA ZANG

Zubaida Zang_Hadiya Monokini

I mean if you’re going to do a one piece this is the way to do it. This monokini by Zubaida Zang is Simple. Chic. Everything. I actually had trouble picking just one piece from this brands collection because every piece on their site is just gorgeous! But realistically for me, this is definitely something I’d rock. Oh and of course, get into their Instagram as well. Summer inspiration all day.

What kind of bathing suits will you be rocking this summer?

Stay blessed beautiful!

These Brown Girls WERKED the Met Gala Red Carpet

So about the Met Gala last night. All I can say is the melanin was flourishing–that’s officially my theme for Spring/Summer 2015–and the brown girls came to slay! Whether you’re into this kind of thing or not, if you were on social media at any point yesterday evening you would have saw the red carpet pics flooding your timeline. And you can’t tell me you didn’t see all my bae’s killing it. The theme this year was China: Through the Looking Glass and here are just a few of my favorites. In no particul–I’m lying. Bow down for the Queen first…and then the rest in no particular order ;).

Dope Brown Brand: The Wrap Life

The Wrap Life

For those of you who know me, either via the blog, in real life, or on the gram…you know my love affair with head wraps is real. Transitioning, they saved me from going crazy! And now fully natural, many a days come around that my fro is just too much to handle and again, head wraps save the day. But besides just being my go to hair accessory for bad, busy, lazy difficult hair days, nothing sets my afrocentric minimalist chic style (is that even a thing?) off like a head wrap. I came across this dope brand on Instagram (where else??) and fell in love. Not only with the wraps which are gorgeous, but the whole vibe of the brand. Just my type!
