My Favorite Shampoo & Conditioner for Natural Hair

So, I’m a product junkie I am. Seriously. But it’s okay because I’m a beauty blogger and that’s part of my job. See what I did there? But in all seriousness my natural hair product shelf is growing larger everyday. If it ain’t a masque, it’s a curling cream. Same thing, different day. But, in the midst of the piles of natural hair products that surround my closet, vanity, and bathroom cabinet, sometimes a girl’s just gotta get back to basics.

ORS Shampoo and Conditioner

After taking out my crochet braids, the crown needed a wash and deep condition like you wouldn’t believe. Whatever I used, I knew it had to do the job right so I broke out my staple Creamy Aloe Shampoo and Replenishing Conditioner by ORS and was reminded AGAIN how much I LOVE these two products together. For real, I can’t even tell you how straight up amazing my hair is. Ever single time I use them.

If you’re not familiar with my natural hair journey, I have very fine kinky 4b/c hair. Yup the good stuff. I’m not even kidding. Most times the crown and I are friends, other times she needs to go figure out what she wants in life. That’s when I install a protective style like my crochet braids. I don’t really use shampoo all like that but after I take out a protective style I absolutely take the time to a shampoo cleanse and deep condition. Literally the only shampoo I use period is the ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo.

I know people can use a whole bunch of different brand products in one wash session but I find my hair likes when I use products within the same line. I always follow up an ORS shampoo session with the ORS Replenishing Conditioner. Can I just tell you that I really don’t think there is a better conditioner than this? I mean, I like other conditioners. A lot. But something about this stuff man…natural hair be flourishing.

I’ve been using ORS products for like my whole life…or since I discovered the brand “a few years ago” in college and I’ve been a fan ever since. My friends used to joke way back then that I should be a brand ambassador for them the way I used to promote their products on campus (PS ORS if you’re reading this, ya girl is available). Ahhh the good old days. So in true Tyshia fashion, if you haven’t tried this shampoo and conditioner yet…what are you waiting on!?

Even though I’m biased, tell me, what’s your favorite shampoo and conditioner? Let’s talk hair products!

Stay blessed beautiful!

On My Radar: Ambi Even & Clear CC+ Cream + Swatches

Ambi CC Cream 1

Happy Monday beauties! Today I’m chatting about one of my favorite brands Ambi, and their new Even & Clear CC+ Cream Even Tone & Environmental Shield. You guys already know how much I love my Ambi complexion cleansing bar so finding out that they formulated a CC cream for brown girls was LOVE! In case you didn’t know, Ambi is a skincare brand that creates cleansers and moisturizers for women of color. Obviously one of the reasons I love them!

My summer skin care regimen has been one of the main reasons I’ve been able to take it easy on the foundation but let’s not pretend that there aren’t days when I could use a little something extra. It’s always tough finding BB and CC creams for brown girls so when I received the new Ambi Even & Clear CC+ Cream*, I immediately had to try it out!

This CC cream contains argan oil, shea butter, and antioxidants to moisturize the skin. It also contains SPF–because yes the brown girls need sun protection too!–without leaving an ashy look that some SPF products tend to do. The Ambi Even & Clear CC+ Cream uses soft focus technology to even your skin tone while shielding your skin from environmental elements.

It’s available in two shades, Light/Medium and Medium/Dark. The darker shades was a perfect match for me.

Ambi CC Cream Swatches Blend

The texture is very creamy and has a nice feel to it when you apply it. I’ve worn it a few times, but you know I’ll extensively try this out before I give you guys an official review. So far though, I have no complaints!

Ambi CC Cream 2

The Ambi Even & Clear CC+ Cream is available at drugstores and beauty supply stores (where I usually grab my cleansing bar) or you can visit

What are you using for your “little something extra” in your summer skin routine?

Best Purple Lipstick Ever: Ruby Kisses Purple Affair

Best Purple Lipstick_Ruby Kisses Purple Affair

Something about purple lipstick just works for me. I’m not even the kind of girl who rocks the brightest or boldest lip colors but you give me any shade of purple, I’m like yaaaasss. I had been wanting to try the Ruby Kisses Matte Lipsticks for awhile so when I finally made way over to the beauty supply and saw Ruby Kisses Purple Affair, I immediately picked it up.

Ruby Kisses Purple Affair

The Ruby Kisses Ultra Matte Super Rich Lipstick is described as:

  • Super Rich, Brilliant And Long Lasting Color,
  • Full Coverage Color Without Leaving Lips Dry,
  • Smooth Application

The color is sooo pretty. It’s a deep blue toned purple (I haven’t been able to do the bright lipstick thing at all this summer) that goes on pretty smoothly. Even though it’s matte it doesn’t feel super dry on your lips especially if you prep beforehand, which is something you should always be doing if you’re wearing a matte lipstick. Nobody has time for dry lips at all.

Ruby Kisses Purple Affair is legit my favorite purple lipstick and it’s under $5! I almost want to cry when I stumble a product so bomb for so little coins. Just winning. You can grab all of the Ruby Kisses Ultra Matte Super Rich lipstick at your local beauty supply or online
. I’m going to wear this until my heart’s content and then I’ll be trying out a few more. Because I mean…y’all know I had to grab more than just one color ;).

What’s your favorite purple lipstick? Drop me a comment and let me know where to get it! A girl can never have too many!

My 3 Product Summer Skincare Routine

3 Product Skincare Routine

In my current drugstore beauty favorites I mentioned a soap that has changed the game for my skin. I realized it’s been awhile since I’ve wrote about my skincare routine. Actually it’s been since last summer. When it comes to my skin I’ve always kept it really simple. My skin–like my hair–does better with a low maintenance routine. I’ve learned to just use what works and let it be. Sometimes less is more ya know?

My current summer skincare routine is super chill. Like so chill I only use 3 products total on a daily basis. I’ve found this works for me and my skin has been thanking me for it.

I start off with the Ambi Complexion Cleansing Bar that I mentioned earlier this week. I really really love this facial soap. My skin was looking so dull, just not flourishing at all. That’s no way to look in the summer. I remember using this wayyyy back when I was in college and I loved it then. I can’t even tell you why I stopped using it but when I was dealing with less than great skin, this is the first thing that came to mind. I know some people say you don’t or don’t have to clean your face twice a day but for me, in the summer, yes ma’am twice a day is mandatory. I wet my skin, lather this on, rinse with warm water and wipe any excess water off with a cool damp wash cloth. I’ve noticed such an improvement in my complexion it’s crazy.

Next up I use Shea Moisture African Black Soap Problem Skin Toner w/ Tamarind & Tea Tree Oil. Now I wouldn’t exactly say my skin is “problem”. It doesn’t give me any problems, it just could be better. But I’ve heard so much about the benefits of African Black Soap and the description on the bottle had me sold.  “Manages oil and shine without clogging pores”, “Controls shine without drying” and “Adds a matte finish to skin”? Yes, yes, and yes. I use this after cleansing my skin so yes, that’s twice a day and I have definitely seen an improvement in my oily skin. Summer is usually the worst and I can end up looking real…greasy…if I’m not careful but using this toner on a daily basis has helped, ALOT.

Finally, I end my routine with the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. This is actually the first new moisturizer I’ve used in basically forever. I have, since the beginning of time, used Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin. But a few months back, around the same time I noticed my skin looking blah, I thought maybe I’d switch it up and the Clinique moisturizer had been on my mind for awhile. I use this directly after my toner, twice daily and I really love it.  I find that it’s a little thicker than my other moisturizer but leaves my skin feeling much more hydrated, longer, and doesn’t feel as greasy. I think I’ve found my new love and I don’t plan on switching back anytime soon.

3 Product Skincare

Excuse the dark circles. No skincare in the world can make up for these long nights on the grind ;). But this is my bare skin…and Copenhagen of course!

That’s it. Three things and I’m done! What does your summer skincare routine look like?

Stay blessed beautiful!

Current Drugstore Beauty Favorites

Beauty Favorite_Drugstore Edition

I love Sephora as much as the next girl, really I do. But there are some things that I can get at my local drugstore that are my ride or dies in my makeup collection. You know the products I’m talking about….if you run out it’s like a real problem. There are a few of those things that I’m currently L.O.V.I.N.G so of course I had to share them.

  1. NYC HD Liquid Eyeliner. This is real life the only liquid eyeliner I use. Period. I almost had a whole breakdown when I stopped seeing NYC displays in my local RiteAid (has anyone else noticed that?) I went to three different ones and no NYC. Thankfully it’s still stocked at Target (though a limited product range) and I grabbed like 3 of these in fear I won’t be able to get ahold of them when I need. A girl has to stay stocked.

  2. Black Radiance Baked Blush in Toasted Almond . This was a previous Brown Girl Beauty Pick and it will forever remain one of my favorite summer blushes. It’s a burnt orange color that does a really great job of just warming up my skin. I’ve become a fan of just pairing this with a bronzer and keeping it at that. Foundation has been non existent for me in this Philly heat.

  3. AMBI Complexion Cleansing Bar. I don’t know if my skin just changes in the summer or whether it just outgrew my last cleanser but I was having real problems with my complexion. I guess you could say it was just dull. I remember using this years ago so I picked it up to give it another try and I’m glad I did. My skin is back!

  4. Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser. Although most days foundation isn’t even a passing thought on my mind, I always reach for my this pore eraser. Whether I’m wearing foundation or not, this primer will always be part of my daily look. It helps keep my skin matte and smooth. A little goes a long way too!

  5. Essie Nail Polish in Blanc. I’m not a nail polish fanatic but I have finally grew my nails to a respectable length so I have been wearing nail polish again. White manicures and pedicures have always been my favorite. I’ve just always loved the contrast against my brown skin. During the cooler months nude or dark colors are in rotation but as soon as the summer hits white it is. Blanc is the perfect summer white polish for me.

That’s it! These are all my favorites in constant rotation. What are some of your favorite drugstore beauty buys?

In My Stash: NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream {Copenhagen}

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream_Copenhagen

You have no idea how long I’ve been trying to find this lippie! Since way back when NYX first launched the matte lip creams every time I would hit up my local beauty supply or make a quick trip Ulta it was always sold out. Every single time. But I didn’t give up. I would hopefully peek at a NYX display in any store that had one…you never know right? Well a few weeks back I FINALLY found it and scooped it up with a quickness. My wait is over and well worth it. I love this color!!

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream_Copenhagen(2)

I have a few other colors in the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream line but this is hands down my favorite. With Transylvania being a VERY close second. It looks a lot darker in the tube than I originally expected and if you’re lighter it will definitely pull darker on you, but the deep berry color makes it very wearable for me. I wouldn’t call it a daily wear but it’s a great color to pop on if you want to add some color without being too dark and bold. It wears just like the other soft matte lip creams so make sure you’re lips are prepped and hydrated.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream_Copenhagen_

I don’t know how it is where you are, but if you have as much trouble finding the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Copenhagen as I did, when you finally come across it GRAB IT! Trust me it’s worth it.

Have you tried this? Do you love it as much as I do?

On My Radar: As I Am Cleansing Pudding + Hydration Elation

On My Radar_As I Am Cleansing Pudding & Hydration Elation

If you know anything about my natural hair, you know that some of my favorite products are by As I Am. I randomly discovered this brand back in when I was transitioning and looking for a cleansing conditioner and since then I’ve mentioned my beloved Coconut Co-Wash more than a few times but long story short: It’s bomb. Period. So when I ran out this past wash day and went to my local beauty supply to find they were smooth out, I was UPSET.

I don’t really do shampoo unless I need to and it took me foreverrr to find a conditioner that left my hair feeling clean. What was a girl to do?? I spent a good 15 minutes trying to figure out my life…or at the very least if there was another store close by that had the cleansing conditioner. After serious debate, I decided to just try a few new As I Am products because I mean, if the cowash (and leave in because you already know how I feel about their leave in hunny) worked well, maybe I’d have similar success with some of their other products.

First thing I grabbed was the Cleansing Pudding+ Sulfate-Free Moisturizing Cleanser. It had me at sulfate-free so even it it isn’t as magical as my cowash, at least I know it’s gentle.

As I am Cleansing Pudding

CLEANSING PUDDING+ Sulfate-Free Moisturizing Cleanser

  • Cleanses hair of residue and product build-up
  • Moisturizes as it cleanses
  • Rids scalp of excess sebum, environmental impurities and shedding scalp debris
  • Provides a soothing scalp treatment
  • Helps promote a healthy environment for hair growth.

Key Ingredients: Tangerine, Aloe Vera, Castor Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Saw Palmetto and Phytosterols   – As I Am

I still needed a conditioner so I grabbed the Hydration Elation Intensive Conditioner. My hair is chronically dry so anything with hydration in the name is good in my book.

As I Am Hydration Elation

HYDRATION ELATION Intensive Conditioner

  • Moisturizes deep within the hair shaft
  • Smooths and aligns cuticle layer
  • Strengthens weak areas and repairs split ends
  • Promotes shine
  • Infused with pure herbal ingredients that stimulate the scalp and hair roots
  • Helps promote healthy hair growth from the follicular level
  • Enhances manageability and overall hair health

Treat your hair every 2 to 3 weeks (or even more frequently, depending upon the condition of your hair and what you do to it).

Key Ingredients: Coconut, Sugar Cane, Green Tea, Apple, Lemon, Vegetable Glycerin, Shea Butter and Vitamin E  – As I Am

I’m excited to try these out and let y’all know how the crown is feeling it. I’ve tried both once and so far: YASSS. But I’ll leave it at that and look out for my full review.

Does anyone else have that one brand of products that your hair just seems to vibe with?

Current Obsession: Carol’s Daughter Almond Cookie Sulfate Free Cleansing Gel

Carols Daughter Almond Cook Sulfate-Free Cleansing Gel

I feel like obsessed just isn’t a strong enough word to describe how much I love this stuff. Maybe I should start by saying that I am not generally a fan of body washes. They either smell way too strong for me, leave my skin feeling super stripped and dry, or do both and that’s just never a good look. I’ve tried a variety and usually don’t finish the bottle. The only exception are the Dove body washes but that may only be because that’s the only soap I use (so far) soooo it’s quite possibly all psychological but I digress.

I received a full size bottle of the Carol’s Daughter Almond Cookie (Moisturizing) Sulfate Free Cleansing Gel in my premier curlBox Body. I was immediately intrigued. For starters, as I mentioned, body washes always leave my skin dry, but this one off the bat claims it’s moisturizing. Second, as a natural girl–and if you’ve read any of my natural hair posts here  or in any of the magazines I write for (shameless plugging)–you know I’m not a fan of sulfates on the crown. How obvious is the thought to try a cleanser for your body without sulfates?? Maybe to you, but the thought literally never crossed my mind. Seeing that this was sulfate-free was like a giant lightbulb going off in my head: “THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE”. Finally, a quick glance at the fragrances within this bottle and I was sold. Anything with Vanilla will always and forever be a win in my book.

True to it’s word, this cleansing gel is super moisturizing. It leaves my skin feeling so incredibly soft after use. Unlike hair products that are sulfate free, this still gets a nice and foamy lather which I like. The smell is basically everything. Carol’s Daughter says it’s one of their most popular scents and I’m like YUP. It’s a very soft and relaxing scent and it stays around for awhile. The best thing about the smell is it’s very noticeable without being too much or overpowering. Just a nice scent that is even hubs approved which is major because he’s not big on body washes either.

I literally use this every, single, night. It’s just the perfect cleanser to use right before hitting the sheets. You smell good and your skin is soft. Perfection. The Carol’s Daughter Almond Cookie line is available in Walgreens and on their website for $11.50. Sooo, yea just go put this in your cart immediately ;).

In My Stash: NYX Intense Butter Gloss {Berry Strudel}

In My Stash_NYX Berry Strudel

Purple lip colors have always been my favorite. You know how there are some colors that just look right? That’s me and purple lipstick. Weird because it isn’t exactly a normal color but who wants to be normal anyway?

I picked up this NYX Intense Butter Gloss during my last Ulta haul and have just now gotten around to wearing it and I’m in LOVE. It’s such a bright vibrant shade and the formula is just love as well. This is the kind of lip product I live for!

In My Stash_NYX Berry Strudel 2

I generally keep my makeup really simple and get creative when it comes to my lips. This shade is the perfect color to spice up my otherwise minimal makeup.

I’m pretty obsessed with the Intense Butter Gloss line and I’ll definitely be adding a couple more of the more bright shades to my stash this spring. You can grab these at Ulta or for about $8.

Stay blessed beautiful!

On My Radar: Dark and Lovely Au Naturale

Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Cover

Happy Monday beauties! How gorgeous was this weekend though? Spring is here! It’s festival season, conference season, and simply beautiful so I was out, about, and all over the city taking in all the festivities. Sunday morning I was invited to a blogger brunch hosted by Dark and Lovely at the African American Museum in Philadelphia (only my favorite place in the city!). They were in town for the Philadelphia Natural Hair Show and put together an intimate event for us bloggers to get together, eat some food, and talk about blogging, natural hair, and Dark and Lovely’s Au Naturale product line.

Current Obsession: Simple Foaming Cleanser

Current Obsession_Simple Foaming Cleanser

You beauties already know that when it comes to my skincare routine I keep it short and sweet. Well… the same thing goes for my hair and beauty routine but you know what I mean. With skincare I don’t try a ton of products, maybe in fear that I’ll break out, and I tend to stick with my oldies but goodies. Recently though, I’ve found myself becoming more and more particular with the condition of my skin. Must be that warm weather approaching that has me looking in the mirror like… umm I’m not ready. So in an effort to GET ready I picked up a few new products to test out and it looks like I have a new favorite. Simple Foaming Cleanser. Absolutely loveeee this stuff!

I’ve been a fan of the Simple Cleansing Face Wipes for years now. I raved about them before but I really love how gentle they are on my skin. Most wipes leave my face really raw and my overly sensitive eyes burning, but not those. So of course when it came to venturing out into new skincare the first place I turned was Simple. I knew I wanted something gentle to start off and something light. A foaming cleasner seemed like the obvious choice.

Simple Foaming Cleanser

What I love about this cleanser is it is beyond gentle. I cleanse with this and it virtually feels like foamy water. No scents. No irritation. No burning eyes either and let me tell you that’s major because my eyes always burn when I cleanse my face. They’re just sensitive like that. But not with this cleanser. After using it my skin feels so clean with out feeling dried out. You know that tight “squeaky” clean feeling that–just doesn’t’ feel right–leaves your skin feeling dry? Yea none of that.

Simple Foaming Cleanser 2

I use this cleanser daily now and I can definitely tell a difference in my skin. It’s softer and is more hydrated. This has definitely become a staple in my new conscious beauty routine and easily a new favorite product.

So tell me, because I need your help, what skincare products are your favorites?? I’m taking suggestions, please and thank you ;).

Stay blessed beautiful!
